Entitlement, Effort & Expectations: Who’s Really Taking Advantage at Work?

For years, we’ve told ourselves a story about work.
That the people who stay late care more.
That those who leave on time are clock watchers.
That flexibility equals entitlement.

But what if that story is outdated… or incomplete?

In this Dynamic Leader Conversation, I explore the uncomfortable, often unspoken tension between leaders and employees around entitlement, effort, reciprocity, and taking advantage. I challenge the assumption that “doing more” automatically equals commitment—and ask whether some of the very systems we’ve created are fuelling burnout, resentment, and disengagement.

This is a conversation about:

  • Who is actually entitled in modern workplaces

  • Why long hours are no longer a marker of great leadership

  • The hidden cost of unrealistic deadlines and silent expectations

  • How leaders unintentionally create the very behaviours they resent

  • What reciprocity, accountability, and adult-to-adult leadership really look like

This isn’t about blaming one generation, one role, or one side of the fence.
It’s about stepping back, mismatching our thinking, and asking a better question:

How have we, as leaders, contributed to the problem—and what could we do differently?

My intention, as always, is not to land you on a single “right” answer, but to leave you with a different way of thinking. One that invites stronger conversations, healthier expectations, and leadership that is grounded in strength, kindness, and mutual respect.

If you’re feeling frustrated, tired, or quietly resentful in your leadership role—this conversation is for you.

Let’s make leadership safer, more human, and a whole lot less exhausting.
