Never Assume They Don’t Need the Conversation

The team member who arrives early, delivers consistently and rarely asks for help might seem like the last person who needs a check-in. But what’s happening beneath the surface?

In this episode, Shelley Flett shares a personal experience from a time when she appeared to be managing everything at work while facing a difficult situation in her personal life. A regular one-on-one with her manager gave her the space to talk about it. She hadn’t asked for that conversation or realised how much she needed it.

Shelley explains why an intentional one-on-one offers something a quick chat between tasks cannot. Protected time helps leaders understand how someone is really doing, notice changes in energy or motivation, and hear about pressures before they grow into exhaustion or disengagement.

She also explores how to approach these conversations with curiosity: ask useful questions, listen without taking over and resist the pressure to fix everything. Done consistently, one-on-ones can build trust, strengthen confidence and help people work in a more sustainable way.
